For Daniel Davis, life is about staying hopeful, staying grateful, and continuing to move forward no matter what challenges come his way.
Living with kidney disease has changed nearly every aspect of Daniel’s daily life. While waiting for a kidney transplant, he attends dialysis treatments three times each week: a process that is physically demanding, emotionally exhausting, and time consuming. Despite these challenges, Daniel remains focused on the positive.
“I love life,” he said. “Even though I have my dark days, I’m good. I keep going.”
Like many dialysis patients, Daniel has faced challenges that extend far beyond his health. Transportation quickly became one of the biggest obstacles. After treatment, he often spent hours riding public transportation across Knoxville to get home, making an already exhausting day even more difficult. With support from friends and community members, Daniel was eventually able to purchase a reliable vehicle, something he describes as a tremendous blessing.
Reliable transportation is critical for dialysis patients, as missing treatments is not an option. Transportation assistance is one of the many ways the East Tennessee Kidney Foundation helps patients throughout the region. The organization also provides support for another important part of the transplant process: dental care.
Before receiving a kidney transplant, patients often must complete extensive dental work to reduce the risk of infection and ensure they are healthy enough for surgery. Daniel is currently completing the final dental procedures required to remain active on the transplant list. Assistance with these expenses can help remove significant barriers for patients working toward transplant eligibility.
“There are days you’re tired before the day even starts,” Daniel said. “But you still have to keep going.”
Even on difficult days, he continues to focus on gratitude instead of discouragement. Throughout his journey, he says the support of friends, family, and his community has helped carry him forward.
“I’m thankful for the people God put in my life,” Daniel said. “That’s what keeps me going.”
Despite the physical and emotional demands of dialysis, Daniel remains grounded in faith, gratitude, and the support of those around him. He credits his family, friends, medical teams, and community for helping him persevere. He is also inspired by the memory of his late brother, whose positive attitude continues to influence the way he approaches life.
“My brother always had a positive attitude,” Daniel said. “No matter what he was going through, he stayed positive. That’s how I want to live, too.”
That mindset has become one of the defining parts of Daniel’s journey. At the dialysis center, he often encourages other patients the same way others encourage him.
“I just try to stay positive with people,” he said. “You never know what somebody else is carrying.”
Organizations like the East Tennessee Kidney Foundation help bridge gaps by providing transportation assistance, dental support, and other critical resources for dialysis patients throughout the region. For Daniel, that support means more than practical help.
“It lets you know somebody cares,” he said.
While the wait for a kidney transplant can be filled with uncertainty, Daniel remains hopeful about the future. He looks forward to regaining his strength, returning to work, and continuing to build a meaningful life centered on helping others and staying connected to his community.
“I won’t give up hope,” he said. “I want to keep going forward.”
“Life is precious,” he said. “You appreciate things differently.”
Today, Daniel continues showing up to treatment with resilience, faith, and hope for the future. He continues encouraging others, staying connected to the people he loves, and waiting for the life-changing call that a kidney donor has been found.
“I’m good where I’m at,” he said. “I just keep pushing forward.”
Daniel hopes that by sharing his story, others will better understand the physical, emotional, and financial burdens many dialysis patients face. His journey is a reminder that resilience, community support, and hope can help people move forward even through life’s most difficult challenges.
